Etymology
Maqṣid comes from the Semitic triliteral root q-ṣ-d, whose verb qaṣada means to head straight for something or to intend it. The prefix ma- turns the verb into a noun of place or purpose, so maqṣid names either the place aimed at or the goal itself. The root also underlies qaṣīda, the classical Arabic ode, originally seen as speech composed with deliberate purpose.
