Etymology
Ḥāra comes from the Arabic root ḥ-w-r, whose base sense is to go around, turn, or return. Classical dictionaries like Lisān al-ʿArab already gloss it as quarter or precinct, built the same way dār (house) comes from d-w-r: the middle radical w contracts to a long ā after a fatḥa. So a ḥāra is literally a cluster of dwellings bounded by the comings and goings of its residents. Some scholars also compare it to Aramaic/Syriac ḥārtā, meaning street or quarter, used in much the same urban sense.
