Etymology
مَعْلُوم comes from the Arabic root ع-ل-م (ʿ-l-m), which carries the sense of knowing. It is the passive participle, built on the مفعول (mafʿūl) pattern, so it literally means 'that which is known.' The same root gives Arabic عِلْم (knowledge) and عَالِم (a knowing person, a scholar). This root is Semitic, not Indo-European, so it has no PIE ancestor.
