Etymology
عِلْم is the verbal noun of the Arabic verb عَلِمَ, to know. Its root ع-ل-م links knowing to marking and recognizing, and the same root yields عَلامة, a mark, and عَلَم, a sign or flag. The word covers both everyday knowledge and organized study. In modern use its plural عُلوم names the academic sciences.
