Etymology
مُعْظَم comes from the Semitic root ʿ-ẓ-m, which carries the sense of greatness and magnitude. It is the passive participle of the verb أَعْظَمَ, so it first meant the part made great, then settled into the greater part or most of. The same root gives عَظِيم, great, and عَظَمَة, grandeur.
