Etymology
شِعْر comes from the Semitic root ش-ع-ر, whose core sense is to feel, perceive, or be aware. Arab lexicographers tied poetry to heightened perception and special knowledge, the poet being one who senses what others miss. The same root yields شاعِر (poet) and شُعور (feeling). It is distinct from شَعْر (hair), which shares the consonants but carries a different vowelling and meaning.
