Etymology

The verb comes from the triconsonantal Semitic root ṭ-l-b, which carries the sense of seeking or searching. From this root Arabic builds a large family tied to demand and request, including طالِب, a student, literally one who seeks, and مَطلَب, a demand. The root is Semitic and has no Indo-European source.
