Word family
Etymology
The verb comes from the Semitic root s-ʿ-d, which carries the idea of good fortune and well-being. The base verb سَعِدَ means to be happy or fortunate. The Form III pattern fāʿala, marked by the long ā after the first consonant, turns this into an action done for someone, so the sense shifts from to be fortunate to to bring good to someone, that is, to help.
