Etymology
مَصْدَر comes from the triliteral Arabic root ص-د-ر (ṣ-d-r), which means to issue, proceed, or come forth. The prefix ma- builds a noun of place or origin, so the word names the point from which something issues. The same root gives صَدْر (chest, front) and صَدَّرَ (to export). In grammar, maṣdar also labels the verbal noun, the form a verb is said to issue from.
