Etymology
شَرِيط comes from the Semitic root ش-ر-ط, which carries the sense of incising, slitting, and drawing a line. A شريط is therefore a long thin strip, something cut or run out in a narrow band. The same root gives شَرْط 'condition' and مِشْرَط 'scalpel'. Modern usage widened the word to ribbon, adhesive tape, and cassette tape.
