Etymology
لَحْم comes from the Proto-Semitic root l-ḥ-m, which denoted food or the staple of a meal. Arabic narrowed the sense to meat, while Hebrew took the same root to mean bread (leḥem). The place name Bethlehem, 'house of bread' in Hebrew, would read as 'house of meat' through Arabic eyes.
