مُشاهَدَة is the verbal noun of the Form III verb شاهَدَ, meaning to watch or to view. Both come from the Semitic root ش-ه-د, which carries the sense of witnessing or being present at something. The pattern مُفاعَلة turns that root into the name of an action, here the act of watching. The same root gives شاهِد, a witness, and شَهادة, testimony.
