Etymology

مُشاهِد is the active participle of the Form III verb شاهد (shāhada), meaning to watch or witness something directly. Both trace to the Semitic root ش-ه-د, whose core sense is to observe, attend, or bear witness. The same root gives Arabic شاهد (witness) and شهيد (martyr, one who bears witness through death). The root is well attested across Semitic languages, not just Arabic.
