Etymology
بَرِيء comes from the triliteral Semitic root ب ر أ, which carries the core sense of being free, clear, or quit of something, whether guilt, illness, or obligation. The pattern فَعِيل turns the root into an adjective describing a lasting quality, so بَرِيء literally marks someone as being in a state of clearance from blame: innocent. The same root gives Arabic بَراءة (innocence, acquittal, and by extension a patent, since a patent clears an inventor's claim) and the verb تَبَرَّأَ (to disown oneself from something).
