Etymology
دَمْع comes from the Semitic root د-م-ع (d-m-ʕ), which across the Semitic languages denotes weeping and tears. It is not an Arabic innovation; the same root appears in the earliest attested Semitic texts. The form دَمْع itself is a plain triliteral noun on the فَعْل pattern, used both as a mass noun for tears and as the base for the related verb and singular noun.
