Etymology

The adjective مادّيّ is built from the noun مادّة, meaning matter or substance. Medieval Arab philosophers used مادّة to translate the Greek concept of hyle, the underlying stuff of physical things, and likely linked it to the root م-د-د, to extend or stretch, since matter was conceived as that which extends in space. Adding the relative suffix ـيّ to مادّة turns the noun matter into the adjective material or materialistic.
