Etymology
Thaqb comes from the Semitic root th-q-b, which carries the core sense of piercing or boring through something. This root gave Arabic the verb thaqaba, to pierce, and the noun thaqb, the resulting hole. The same root supplies modern scientific terms such as thaqb aswad, black hole, and thaqb al-ozone, ozone hole, both coined by extending the old physical sense to new domains.
