Etymology

مَحْمُول is the passive participle (ism mafʿūl) of the Arabic verb حَمَلَ, meaning to carry or bear, built on the root ḥ-m-l. Literally it means the thing that is carried. Modern Arabic pressed the word into service for portable technology, so الهاتف المحمول, the carried telephone, got shortened in everyday use to just المحمول.
