Etymology
غار comes from the Arabic triliteral root غ-و-ر (gh-w-r), which carries the sense of sinking, depth, and hollowness. The related verb غارَ يَغُورُ describes water receding into the ground or eyes sinking into their sockets. A غار is a hollow opening in a mountainside, formed by that same idea of a depression or sinking-in. This is a native Semitic root with no traceable link to Proto-Indo-European.
