Etymology

عُمْلَة comes from the Arabic root ع-م-ل, which underlies verbs and nouns about work and use, such as عَمِلَ (to work) and اِستِعْمَال (usage). The noun originally carried the sense of something in active use, and this narrowed over time to mean money in circulation, much as English currency comes from Latin currere, to run or flow. Arabic is a Semitic language, so no Indo-European root applies here.
