Etymology
Sharḥ is the verbal noun of the triliteral root ش ر ح (sh-r-ḥ), whose base sense is to cut open or slit. The verb shifted from this physical act to a mental one: opening up a text or idea so its parts become visible. Classical Arabic scholarship used sharḥ as the standard word for a commentary written to unpack an earlier, denser text. The word is Semitic, not Indo-European, so it has no Proto-Indo-European root.
