مَشْهَد comes from the Semitic root ش-ه-د (sh-h-d), 'to witness' or 'to see.' On the مَفْعَل pattern it forms a noun of place, literally a place or moment of witnessing. From there it came to mean the sight before one's eyes, then a scene in a play or film, and later the broader social or political scene.
