Etymology
رِفْقَة comes from the Arabic root r-f-q, which carries the sense of gentleness and of going alongside someone. The same root gives رَفِيق, a companion, and رِفْق, kindness. رِفْقَة names the state of keeping company, and by extension a group that travels together. The tie between gentleness and company is old: to accompany someone well is to treat them kindly.
