Etymology
آذَى is the Form IV verb built on the Semitic root ʾ-ḏ-y, whose core sense is harm or injury. The related noun أَذًى means harm, hurt, or nuisance and appears often in classical texts. The Form IV pattern أَفْعَلَ makes the root transitive, giving the sense of causing harm to someone. The root is Semitic and has no Indo-European source.
