Etymology

دَمَّر is the Form II verb of the Semitic root د-م-ر, which carries the idea of ruin and perishing. The doubled middle consonant marks the intensive, causative pattern. Where the Form I verb دَمَرَ means to perish, Form II means to make something perish, that is, to destroy it. The related noun دَمَار means destruction or ruin.
