Etymology
رَفيق comes from the Semitic root r-f-q, which carries the sense of gentleness and of going alongside someone. The فَعيل pattern turns that root into a noun for the person who keeps you company. The same root gives رِفْق, meaning kindness, and مِرفَق, the elbow, the joint that bends to support the arm. Arabic is Semitic, not Indo-European, so it has no PIE root.
