خَمْس comes from the Semitic root خ-م-س, used for the number five across the language family. Proto-Semitic had a form like *ḫamš-. The same root gave Hebrew ḥāmēš and Aramaic ḥammeš. In Arabic counting, the bare form خَمْس pairs with feminine nouns, while خَمْسة pairs with masculine ones.
