Etymology
The root ذ ك ر runs through the Semitic languages with two linked senses: to remember and to mention aloud. It is the same root behind the noun ذِكْر, recollection or invocation. Hebrew zakhar and Akkadian zakaru share the ancestor, Proto-Semitic *ḏkr. The bond between memory and speech is old: to mention a thing is to call it back to mind.
