Etymology

مُرافِق comes from the triliteral root ر-ف-ق, which carries the sense of gentleness and close companionship. The Form III verb رافق means to accompany or keep company with someone, and مُرافِق is its active participle, literally one who accompanies. The same root gives Arabic رفيق, friend or companion, and رفق, gentleness.
