Etymology

لاتينيّ is a nisba adjective built from the borrowed name اللاتين ("the Latins"), which entered Arabic through contact with European languages. The ultimate source is the Latin word Latinus, tied to Latium, the region around ancient Rome. Arabic simply added its own relational suffix -ي to the loaned base rather than deriving the word from a native Semitic root.
