Etymology

مَلْء is the masdar, or verbal noun, of the Form I verb مَلَأَ (malaʾa), meaning to fill. It follows the common فَعْل pattern that Arabic uses to turn a three-letter root into an abstract noun naming the action itself. Arabic is a Semitic language, not an Indo-European one, so it has no PIE root. The root m-l-ʾ is old and shared across Semitic languages.
