Ḥajjār comes from the triliteral root ḥ-j-r, meaning stone, set in the intensive pattern fa''āl that Arabic uses for trades named after their material or tool, the same way najjār (carpenter) comes from najara (to carve wood) and khabbāz (baker) comes from khubz (bread). The same root gives ḥajar (stone) and ḥijāra (stones, masonry). Because this is a Semitic root rather than an Indo-European one, it has no Proto-Indo-European ancestor, and no cognate outside Semitic can be stated with confidence.
