Etymology

مُدْرِك is the active participle of the Form IV verb أَدْرَكَ, built on the triliteral Semitic root د-ر-ك (d-r-k), which carries the sense of reaching, catching up to, or attaining something. The causative Form IV pattern turns this into grasping something mentally, that is, perceiving or realizing it. The م- prefix and -ِ- vowel pattern (مُفْعِل) mark it as the doer of that mental reaching.
