Etymology
Arabic أَرْمَلَة comes from the Semitic root ر-م-ل (r-m-l), the same root behind the masculine أَرْمَل, widower. Classical Arab lexicographers linked this root to رَمْل, sand, on the idea that a widow was left destitute, as bare as sand, though modern scholars treat that link as folk etymology rather than settled fact. Because Arabic is a Semitic language, it has no Indo-European ancestor, so no PIE root applies here.
