Etymology
رَمْل comes from the triliteral Semitic root ر-م-ل (r-m-l), a base that Arabic dictionaries treat as covering loose, fine grains as well as, in a separate but related sense, the idea of being left alone or widowed. The noun رَمْل itself denotes sand in the plain physical sense, the substance of deserts and beaches. Arabic also built a whole predictive practice, علم الرمل (the science of sand), on tracing patterns in scattered grains.
