Etymology

Khariif comes from the Semitic root kh-r-f, tied to picking fruit and gathering harvest in ancient Arabia, since autumn was when dates and other fruit ripened. The same root gave kharaf, meaning senility, because old age was pictured as a person's own autumn. It also gave kharuf, a lamb, since sheep were commonly weaned or slaughtered in that season. Classical Arabic lexicons list khariif as one of the four standard season names, alongside spring, summer, and winter.
