Word family
Etymology
Arabic أَلَم comes from the Semitic triconsonantal root ʾ-l-m, which carries the sense of pain and hurt. The same root gives the verb أَلِمَ, to feel pain, and the adjective أَليم, agonizing. The broken plural آلام covers a wide field, from bodily aches to deep grief.
