Etymology
شاهِد is the active participle of the verb شَهِدَ (shahida), to witness or testify, built on the triliteral root ش-ه-د. The same root produces شَهادة (testimony) and شَهيد (martyr), the one who gives the ultimate witness. The root is shared across the Semitic family.
