Etymology

بِنْت is the feminine counterpart of ابن (ibn), 'son,' formed from a Semitic root for offspring plus a feminine -t ending. The same word runs through the Semitic family: Hebrew bat and Akkadian bintu both go back to Proto-Semitic *bint-. It has no link to Indo-European words for daughter, so no PIE root applies.
