Etymology
باع comes from the Semitic triliteral root b-y-ʿ, tied to trade and exchange. It is a hollow verb: the weak middle consonant yāʾ surfaces as a long ā in the past tense and a long ī in the present. The same root yields بَيْع, the noun for a sale, and بَيْعة, the pledge of allegiance once sealed by a handclasp.
