Etymology

مادّة comes from the Semitic root m-d-d, which means to extend, to stretch, or to measure out. It is the feminine active participle of the verb مَدَّ, to extend or supply, so the noun first meant that which is supplied or extended. From this came the sense of matter or material, the stuff that makes up bodies. Later the word widened to cover an academic subject, an article of a law, and an ingredient.
