Etymology

عَلامَة comes from the Arabic triliteral root ع-ل-م, which links the senses of knowing and marking. A عَلامَة is literally the thing by which something is recognized, the mark that makes it known. The same root gives عِلْم 'knowledge,' عَلَم 'flag or landmark,' and مُعَلِّم 'teacher.' The word is built on the faʿāla noun pattern with the feminine ending ة.
