Etymology

راقَب is a Form III verb built on the triliteral root ر-ق-ب (r-q-b), which carries the idea of watching and guarding. The Form III pattern (fāʿala) lengthens the first vowel and shapes the root into sustained action directed at an object, hence 'to watch over' or 'to keep under observation.' The same root gives رَقِيب, 'watcher' or 'censor,' and الرَّقِيب, one of the divine names meaning 'the All-Observing.'
