Etymology
The word derives from the Arabic root r-q-b, which carries the sense of watching, guarding, and keeping an eye on. "رَقِيب" is the فَعيل pattern, often used for an agent who performs the action steadily. It names one who watches: a guard, a supervisor, a censor. It is also one of the names of God in Islam, the Ever-Watchful.
