Etymology

The word is the verbal noun of the Form IV verb أَصابَ, meaning to hit a target or to strike. It derives from the triliteral root ص-و-ب, which carries the sense of hitting the mark and, by extension, of being correct. From striking a target the meaning broadened to a blow that lands on the body, hence a wound, and later to a case of disease that strikes a person.
