Etymology

تَواجُد is the verbal noun of the Form VI verb تَواجَدَ, built on the root و-ج-د, "to find." The Form VI pattern تَفاعُل often marks a mutual or reflexive state, so the literal sense is "being found" or "finding oneself present." From this the everyday meaning "presence" developed. In Sufi writing the same word names an induced state of ecstasy.
