Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic triliteral root م-ض-ي (m-ḍ-y), whose base verb مَضَى means to pass, elapse, or go forward. أَمْضَى is the Form IV (causative) derivation, so it means to make something pass: to spend time, or to put a matter through to completion. The sense of signing grows from this, since a signature carries a decision through and makes it final.
