Etymology
The verb comes from the triliteral Semitic root ḍ-gh-ṭ, which carries the sense of pressing or compressing. From the same root Arabic forms the noun ḍaghṭ, meaning pressure, used for both physical force and figurative strain. The shift from physical pressure to social and political pressure is old and stable in the language.
