Etymology
The word comes from the noun وَطَن (waṭan), meaning homeland or native place. Arabic forms relative adjectives by adding the nisba suffix ـِيّ to a noun. So وَطَنِيّ literally means "of the homeland." The sense widened to cover both "national" in an administrative way and "patriotic" as a personal loyalty.
