Etymology
Waṭan comes from the triliteral root w-ṭ-n, which carries the sense of residing and settling in a place. The related verb waṭana means to take up residence. From the idea of the place where one settles, the noun came to mean the land of one's home. In modern usage it also carries the political sense of nation.
